Choosing nursery furniture can be fun but it can also be challenging. There are all kinds of types of furniture options in this sector from individual pieces of furniture through to complete sets and it can be hard to know where to make a start.
Some parents will opt to buy a set of nursery furniture as this is easiest for them whilst others will buy individual pieces. To make the best choices here it is important to think about how much space you have in the nursery and what kind of furniture you think that you will need.
The first item of furniture to think about is essential -- the cot or cot bed. Cot beds are really simply cots that can be adapted into a junior bed when the child outgrows their cot. If you are looking not to have to buy nursery furniture again for a few years then consider a cot bed -- they can last to the age of 5+.
Many parents like to buy changing tables or changing dressers for the nursery and, of course, there are also plenty of storage options available. For example, you can choose from dressers, chests, boxes, shelving and wardrobes. You can even buy seating for the room -- both for you (nursing chair) and for the child (chairs and benches).
Nursery furniture is made from various kinds of materials although woods, veneers and wood effects are extremely popular. Some parents like to buy painted nursery furniture either in white or in brighter colours. Some furniture here will come ready made and some will come flat-packed. If buying ready made furniture then check that the access to the room is suitable for the item sizes. If buying flat-packed furniture then ensure that the items are put together securely according to the instructions.
Finally, remember that safety is an issue with nursery furniture. Make sure to buy furniture that has passed all relevant safety standards (such as the BSI`s Kite Mark scheme).
